allowing your candle to perform at its very best

Candle Care

The first thing we ask is that you embrace the character of natural wax.

The wax we use is 100% natural and plant-based as a blend of soy wax and coconut wax which creates a beautiful, clean and long-lasting candle with a fabulous scent throw. The beauty of using natural products is that they possess certain qualities you won’t find in mass-produced candles, qualities which allow the natural wax to burn cleaner and longer than non-plant-based waxes such as paraffin.

You might notice slight variations in colour, dimples on the surface or frosting which are all indications that natural products are being used. We promise these beautiful characteristics of natural wax won’t affect the scent or performance of your candle.

After burning, you may notice our wax develops little dimples or holes or you may see little bubbles appear in the wax. While some may see these as imperfections, we feel these character traits are worth the assurance that only natural products have been used and it’s a small price to pay for having a slow-burning, beautiful clean wax that doesn’t produce the soot or nasties in the air like other candles you may find on the market.

The first burn is the most important.

Burn your candle for at least 3-4 hours the very first time you light it so that the melted wax reaches all edges of the candle container. Your candle has a ‘memory’ and if you don’t burn it until a full wax pool develops, you may see a tunnel effect when you burn it again. No one likes wasted wax so be sure to burn it long enough the very first time and then around 2-3 hours for each time you burn it after that and never more than 4 hours as the glass will become very hot.

We’ve worked incredibly hard to ensure our wax and wick combinations will give you a nice even burn every time so to help our beautiful candles to perform optimally and give you the most pleasure, you’ll want to make sure that the melted wax reaches all the edges of the container every time you burn it.

When you’re dealing with open flames, safety is paramount.

Make sure you place your candle out of any draughts (like near a radiator, windowsill, or open window). This creates a bigger flame which will melt your wax at a much faster rate than it should and could be dangerous.

Try not to burn your candle for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time to avoid the glass getting too hot and never move your candle once it’s been lit.

Keep your candles far away from the reach of curious children or pets and never burn near anything flammable like curtains or bedding. Make sure you pop your candle on something that’s heat-resistant too when you light it – we particularly like using our gold candle lids for this purpose.

Maintaining your candle as you use it

You’ll find with our beautiful woven ribbon wicks, you’ll need to trim your wick after most burns to about 5mm. We think this extra step is worth it to make sure your candle lasts as long as possible. If your wick is too long, you might notice that it uses up the candle wax faster (the wax is the wick’s fuel after all) or you may see soot or smoke appearing which means the candle is burning too hot.

If a little mushroom shape appears on the tip of the wick, remove these once the wax sets again and before re-lighting or you may get smoke or fallen ashes which can impede the scent.

A wick trimmer will make this process a lot easier but sharp small scissors or a nail clipper will work in a pinch too or you can just use your fingers to break the blackened part of the wick off. Be sure to remove anything that’s fallen into the wax before lighting.

While you’re at it, consider treating yourself to candle lid. Gently placing this over your candle will extinguish the flame gently without any smoke to allow you to continue to enjoy any lingering scent.

Our beautiful ribbon wicks are made from 100% natural woven fibres which burn slowly and their wide shape means you’ll get a great scent throw and the best chance of the wax melting all the way to the edges. They work incredibly well with our plant-based wax. Remember, if the wick has been left too long, it may end up bending and falling into the wax, extinguishing the flame.

If you find this has happened, simply blow out the candle, lift the wick up straight for a minute or so and as it cools, the wick will again stand upright. Be sure to trim it to around 5mm before burning it again.

Know when to let go.

Once the wax reaches around 10mm from the bottom of the glass, it’s ready for its next life. The reason for this is because at that very low point, the wax can superheat which means it will be producing a lot of heat at the bottom of the container. Our ribbon wicks sit on a metal stabiliser and should self-extinguish but if it hasn’t, then for safety reasons, we recommend blowing out your candle when the wax gets very low.

While our candle glass vessels are fully recyclable, we think they are just too pretty not to re-use. Place the candle jar in the freezer for a few hours for the wax to contract. You’ll be able to pop out the remaining wax easier. Wash in warm soapy water and use it for plants, makeup brushes, as a desk caddy or whatever else your creative heart desires.
