It’s probably premature to start planning for a future house before we’ve even clapped eyes on it, nevermind the fact we haven’t even put our house on the market yet and ignoring the fact we still have a total hallway overhaul to do before we can even get to that. But well, I can’t actually help myself. Don’t get me wrong – I love our home and the things we’ve done to it to make it our own but getting started on a whole new project, having an entirely fresh slate to get my ‘eclectic boho glam’ on? Oh my goodness, the thought of it both terrifies and delights me.

So being the interior design-obsessive that I am, I have to consider the things we’ve done in this house that I have no plans on repeating in the next. I can think of very very few things we left alone when our home overhaul began but one thing we decided to keep was the dark wood blinds in the living room left by the previous owners. Window dressings are not cheap and so leaving something that did a perfectly practical job seemed the right move at the time. And as we had dark wood blinds in the living room, I decided for consistency sake, to replicate that look throughout the downstairs rooms.

Now, there’s nothing particularly wrong with wood blinds. They are fine. But they don’t exactly make any kind of interesting design statement. In the next house? I’m very very keen on doing something different.

This whole set up can just get right in my future house, please. Okay, I might change the hardware to gold but that’s about it.

So, when Shutterly Fabulous got in touch to see if I’d like to have a look at their offerings and share my findings with you, I felt as though I had my answer. Beautiful, statement making plantation shutters which most certainly make as big or as subtle a design statement as you’d like.

Solid plantation shutters from Shutterly Fabulous

There’s something so gloriously classic about plantation shutters in a home. They remind me of the old English period dramas I used to watch as a kid where all the big stately homes had them. The nice thing is, they are actually incredibly practical as well as being insanely beautiful.

Why Buy Shutters?

Shutterly Fabulous - Tier on Tier Shutter Green

They’re good for your heating bills AND the environment: Closing shutters at dusk are proven to insulate windows and can reduce your heating costs. I love that Shutterly Fabulous uses sustainable Poplar hardwood for theirs (no cheap MDF!) which has FSC® certification, using even fewer precious resources.

They are easier to clean: Dust is much easier to wipe off wooden slats than blinds and curtains. When curtains or blinds get ingrained with dust, it creates a breeding ground for dust mites, leading to allergies. Ewwe. Let’s not think too hard on that one.

They’ll give you kerb appeal: While we’re not planning to install shutters in our current home, they do actually impress buyers giving the impression of a better-cared for home and – bonus – they’ll hide those ugly PVC windows.

Completely bespoke and perfectly fitted: Shutterly Fabulous’ fitting is completely made-to-measure to the millimetre. So they can go anywhere you want and be finished either in wood or made to colour match any paint or hue you desire.

Shutterly Fabulous - Golden Oak Bedroom

They’re wonderfully quiet: A fully-closed wooden shutter acts as a natural noise barrier which is great if you live on a busy street. Plus, whether they are left open or shut, Shutterly Fabulous’ shutters are made so sturdy and so well, they don’t bang and rattle around like blinds can.

They provide a privacy customised to your needs: Close your eye-level shutters to keep your room and its contents out of sight and yet still let the light in from above. If you live near a main road, there’s complete reassurance no one will be able to do any peeping!

You can control light levels and provide UV protection: No other kind of window covering will give you better light control. Throw back your shutters to let the light flood in or angle the louvres upwards to keep the sun from fading furniture. (Oh and you don’t have to worry about Shutterly Fabulous’ shutters fading – they’re finished in a UV protective paint or stain.)

Colour & Style Options

Shutterly Fabulous - Blue Cafe Bathroom

Shall we talk about the options for colour for a moment? Now for someone like myself who feels the need to change the colour scheme of a room on a yearly basis, this may not be the most sensible option for me personally. But for those of you who have favourite shades that you’ll love for years, they do some incredible designs and are able to colour match any shade of your choosing. And you don’t even have to just choose one – why not consider a rainbow of pastels? Yes, why not indeed?

They’ve got a whole slew of different options as well. From plantation style to solid panel, wood shutters for doors, tier-on-tier, cafe-style, full height, tracked and even special shapes are available. As they are custom built to your specification, the options are nearly limitless. The solid ones look especially smart and despite the fact I keep saying I’m tired of millennial pink, I see stuff like this and think, ‘Okay, maybe I’m not quite done just yet.’

A few reasons I was impressed with Shutterly Fabulous the fact that they are absolute experts in their field. They operate nationwide with specialist consultants (not salesmen!) that are shutter experts and will talk through every aspect of the design and options available. They will also undertake the survey of your windows, which means no second visit before you can even place your order. Nice!

Plus, they are rated a staggering 9.5 out of 10 over on Trustpilot. So you don’t just have to take my word for it – you can read lots of reviews from people who’ve used the service.

So shutters are absolutely on my wishlist for our next home, no matter what home we choose because my days of rattling wood blinds are over. Would you choose shutters for your home or have you already? Which are your favourite of the ones I’ve shown here today? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
