Colour Lust: Is Navy The New Black?
As I'm writing this post, I have just FINALLY been able to put the garden furniture, pots and a few bits and pieces on the wee little patio we just built and it's so nice that it's all starting to come together! Oh my god, I can't wait to finish so I can show you!
However, as promised, despite currently being slightly obsessed with gardens and exteriors, and despite having the most gorgeous weather in any March I can remember since coming to this country, I thought I'd pull us out of the garden and back indoors today, even if just for a wee bit. In doing so, I wanted to share a colour that I've recently been very drawn to.
Now, navy is not a colour that currently appears anywhere in my own home but I am really loving the grown-up tailored look it brings to gorgeous interiors, especially when paired with white and other brights.
The pattern on pattern in the first picture below is just all kinds of fabulous and the colour combo of navy blue, bright white and coral is out of this world. The little gold side table is the icing on the swoon worthy cake.
The combination of navy with mint green is just as inspired. I would have never thought about putting those two together (isn't there a rhyme 'blue and green should never be seen'?) but it works gorgeously and looks so sophisticated in this setting. Screw the rhyme, this is awesome.
I'm sure everyone in blogland has seen these amazing blue upholstered doors but my god, they are stunning with those yellow chairs and pops of fushia pink.
Now, this next dining room is incredibly masculine with the brown leather nailhead trim chairs and navy blue rug but good god it's sexy.
I know I've showed off this room before on my blog but I think I'm in a little bit in love with that navy velvet sofa. Don't tell my chesterfield.
Oooh and how about paired with purple? Again, never would have thought this would work but somehow, somehow, it just looks great.
Purple not doing it for you? What about a pop of cerise with a big helping of navy and white? Gorgeous, no?
I love how here, the navy punctuates all the pale colours, especially that lucious soft pink. Yum yum.
This is a bit more subdued than what I would normally go for but neutrals get zhushed mightly nicely with the addition of white piping around navy blue cushions and a gorgeous geometric print rug. I love the rug-on-rug action with the seagrass!
Another fabulous rug! I'm dying here, are you dying? The coral works so well with it, doesn't it? Oh symmetry, I try not to love you but you keep pulling me back.
Even in a bathroom it looks amazing. It almost looks black but you can see all the blue-y goodness where the light is streaming in.
Now, I'm not mad on the chair print, admittedly, but how fab does everything pop against the dark blue of the shelving unit? Love it! And that print, I just want to fall inside of it and roll around in all the colours.
Full on OTT navy blue? Oh ok, go on then. Hell, why not add a couple big f*ck off columns while you're at it? I mean, if you are gonna go blue, you might as well go all the way, no?
So that, my lovelies, is a roundup of some great rooms that use navy blue in all different ways - from the most subtle touches to an all out navy blue orgy.
What do you think? Is navy the new black? Would you add it to your space? Which is your favourite combination?

Sneaky Preview: Weekend Back Garden Blitz (Part II)
Well, my lovelies, it's been another weekend of work in our back garden and we're one step closer to making it pretty damn habitable.
Well, with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees C (that's almost 70 degrees F) and gorgeously sunny ALL WEEKEND, it would have been rude not to be out there soaking up every single delicious ray.
Ya know, we've had plans almost every single weekend since the new year up to 2 weekends ago and in the last two weekends, I'm sure we've gotten more done than we have in the last 4 months. Amazing what you can do when you don't have any plans to be out of the house. I think we all need weekends like this, don't you?
Of course, there were more trips to Homebase and B&Q and more than enough money parted with... its all kind of snowballed, this idea of a little space in the back of the garden, both practical and dare-I-dream pretty... but at least both W & I have run with it, realising that with a bit of DIY, we can make the garden our own.
The sad part, however, is that I can't show you the full reveal just yet. I know, I know, it's just the way these things go because it's not entirely finished just yet. I really hoped that I would be able to show you everything, all dolled up and looking all sexy but yeah, it's not quite to dolled-up sexy status just yet.
What I will show you however is a couple of sneak peaks and share a little bit of what we have done...
The most exciting thing (well, to me anyway) is that we've decided to create a wee little patio area in the neglected space at the very back of the garden.
There was quite a lot of this kind of action going on as well... mixing mortar. Oh yeah, we know how to party here at Swoon Worthy.
We levelled the area and put down sand...
And now we've got a fabulous little area that we can hang out on... Well, once the paving stones set completely. It takes about 3 days before we can actually put things down on them which is one more reason I can show you the full reveal just yet.
But I did manage to score this cute little bistro set from Habitat for £30 from eBay which I'm picking up this evening after work! I love the cute orange colour - Tangerine Tango baby oh yeah!
And while W built up our little patio and in between eBay bids... I did a LOT of planting...
There was Heather...
Some Viola...
And Sweet William which will at some point burst into pretty pretty blooms...
And of course, a few pretty potted plants...
The planters match the shed perfectly now which makes my little OCD brain burst with happiness.
Oh yeah! That's something. I also painted the shed...
And added some hardware...
And W built up the little wall as well....
And then, when we were all finished on Sunday afternoon, we had more than just a couple of these (hick) in the remaining sunshine...
What did you get up to this weekend? Was the sun shining where you were?

Cheap and Easy DIY: Ideas for A Pretty Garden on a Budget
As you can see, I've got gardens on the brain after the last couple weekends of back-breaking work to get our garden into some kind of habitable state so you'll have to forgive me for the single-sightedness of my blog lately. I promise I'll get back to interiors (rather than exteriors) soon.
However, I did promise that I was going to share a few little things I came across in my interweb travels that I thought would be relatively easy or inexpensive to recreate yourself.
Creative planters are probably the easiest and cheapest so we'll start there. I love the look of a mishmash of different styles of planters to keep things looking eclectic and interesting so don't be afraid to adopt more than one type of planter!
These teapots are just gorgeous en masse but I'm sure they'd look just as cute in a smaller collection. Just don't forget to carefully drill small holes in the bottom where there's no glaze for drainage.
The tea drinkers aren' t having all the fun here. Those old coffee tins can be painted in varying tones and put to good use as planters too. Some good quality spray paint that's suitable for metal should work fine here, just make sure it's the kind that won't rust! I personally love Montana Gold which is suitable for outdoor applications and comes in every colour imaginable.
Don't throw out your old colanders! Plant up some herbs or flowers in that puppy and hang 'er up!
There are lots of cute planters on the market as well. Here's a couple that I love...
Orla Keily's little plant pots are so cute and retro. They start at £13 for the smallest kind. Yummy!
I also really love this gorgeous planter from Oka. It's a little more pricey at £36 but the pattern is so unusual, a single one grouped with some more inexpensive simple ones would really stand out.
I loved this idea as well - a garden trellis isn't just for roses or ivy, ya know. A whole herb collection or cute flowers can be hung for a vertical garden effect. Perfect for small spaces too!
You can take this idea even further by using these pretty little galvanised buckets from Ikea that are only £2 each! Total cuteness. Drill a couple of holes in the sides, attach with some hooks and Bob's yer uncle.
Adding colour to your deck or patio doesn't have to be too expensive and couldn't be easier. Habitat has these lovely 120mm x 180mm (that's almost 4' x 6'!) outdoor rugs now available for a mere £15 and come in blue and pink.
Need some outdoor lighting for when the evenings are warm enough to sit outside long after the sun's gone down? It's something W and I look forward to alllllll year. We really need to move to a warmer climate. This great DIY shows you can recreate more expensive rattan ball string lights for cheap as chips: Buy a bag of rattan balls in the dollar/pound shop and pop a string of fairy lights into the gaps - easy peasy lemon squeezy.
More drama needed? How about this gorgeous DIY tutorial which shows you how to create elegant string lights that are slightly larger - making loads of them really would look gorgeous over a dining table on a candle lit summer evening.
Thought crates were only good for furniture? Well, apparently not. Here's another idea for a vertical herb garden. Clever for small spaces, no?
Need more ideas? Well, that's cool because I've got more for ya.
Paint your shed a lovely shade and add pretty bunting and a window box bursting with colour for a sweet modern cottage look...
Paint wood furniture that may have seen better days in bright pretty colours. Lots of people are getting rid of their older garden furniture on eBay so look for a bargain that just needs a bit of TLC. Or you can get Director-style Chairs so inexpensively nowadays - go for weather resistant paint like Cuprinol (which comes in lots of gorgeous colours) to ensure the colour doesn't get bleached by the sun and can stand up to the occasional rain shower.
Heck, you can even paint terracotta pots (less than a pound in Homebase) in pretty colours for added outdoor sass.... Pretty amazing, no?
Hope you were inspired by this post to create a pretty outside space for yourself on the cheap. What's your favourite idea? Is there anything I've missed? Something you've seen recently that you want to share? See any ideas here you might try yourself? I would love to hear from you!
